Order quantity affects capsule manufacturing cost, but not for the reason most people assume. Here's what actually changes as batch size grows:
The biggest cost driver isn't capsule filling itself — it's the preparation, machine setup, validation, cleaning and documentation around it. Whether a run produces the standard 100,000-capsule MOQ or 1,000,000 capsules, that fixed work takes roughly the same effort.
That fixed overhead is spread across however many capsules come off the line. On a smaller batch, it can take up a much larger share of total production time — in some cases, preparation and cleaning take almost twice as long as production itself. On a larger batch, the same fixed work is spread across more capsules, which is what makes bigger runs more cost-efficient per unit.
This is a difference in ratio, not in rigor. Every batch — regardless of size — goes through the same preparation, setup, validation, cleaning and documentation steps. A smaller batch isn't cleaned less thoroughly or validated to a lower standard; it simply carries the same fixed process across fewer units.

Shell type
GMP Pharma manufactures capsules in both gelatin and vegetarian (HPMC) shells.
HPMC shells typically cost more than gelatin, mainly because of the raw material itself. That added cost is often worth it: HPMC makes a product suitable for vegetarian and vegan consumers as well as everyone else, and in our experience, offering an HPMC option can grow a brand's addressable market by roughly 5-10% across many European countries.

Packaging
Capsules rarely leave a production line unpackaged. Bulk packaging, jars, bottles and retail cartons are all available alongside capsule production, and blister packaging can be added when required — each format carries a different cost, from materials and labeling to the labor to fill and close it. Packaging is confirmed against your formulation and target market as part of the same production plan as the capsules themselves, not priced separately once capsules are already filled.
